Asia-Pacific markets mixed as Australia falls into first recession in three decades

Asia-Pacific markets were mixed in early trading Wednesday, after Wall Street hit more records and Australia confirmed it was in its first recession in 29 years.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 NIK, +0.47% advanced 0.2% while Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index HSI, -0.19% slid 0.6%. The Shanghai Composite SHCOMP, -0.17% fell 0.4% while the smaller-cap Shenzhen Composite 399106, +0.45% advanced 0.2%. South Korea’s Kospi 180721, +0.63% slipped 0.2%, while benchmark indexes in Taiwan Y9999, -0.03% , Singapore STI, -0.26% and Indonesia JAKIDX, +0.02% fell. Australia’s S&P/ASX 200 XJO, +1.84% gained 1.6%.
