Global Markets Are Muted, but Uncertainty Awaits on Wall Street

HONG KONG — Global investors took a deep breath on Monday ahead of a holiday week in many markets, as they awaited reaction to an unusual statement made over the weekend by the United States Treasury Secretary about the health of the American banking system.

The comments weighed on European stocks, which sank at the start of trading, but pared some losses until they were only slightly lower by late morning. The damp start to the European trading day followed a mixed day in Asian markets.

Futures markets indicated that Wall Street would open higher on Monday.
